The no-show phenomenon is a global problem. It’s frustrating to put aside time to interview a candidate only to have them not show up without any warning at all.
Some of the reasons a candidate didn’t show up:
As an employer, you didn’t leave a good impression and they didn’t want to say no at the time of your interview.
They were caught off guard and you gave them a time that didn’t work for them with no other option
They wanted to come but they lost your contact information to reach you again
They wanted to come but they got lost on the way
They were running late and couldn’t recover
They changed their mind and were too embarrassed or were not polite enough to call
Did you know that there are lots that you can take to improve candidate show-up rates?
Phone Screening and Interview Scheduling
When you first talk to a candidate on the phone, take your time, build a bond and make sure that they are interested in the position. Explain the role and its responsibilities, check their career interest and why they want to join, make sure to listen to their answer, make sure that their answers align with what you are looking for, ask about their career and salary expectations. Also, tell them a little bit about your company. But make sure that calls in not more than 15-20 minutes so you still have the time to discuss every detail in person.
The more a candidate likes you and feels interested in a position, the more likely is that they will show up.
Make sure that when you invite them for the interview, you provide them with a clear address, a contact person, email address, and a phone number for the candidate to get back to if they need any help. When scheduling a candidate, it helps to give them more than one option for when they can come in for the interview.
